The process of developing a performance part like a Mopar® Shaker Hood is a complicated and involved one, according to Nicho Vardis, Mopar Design Manager. “It starts with a 2D sketch of the product that gives everyone an idea of what the end product will look like. We then have a discussion with engineers and planners to determine the feasibility of actually manufacturing the part.”
ANOTHER DIMENSION
The next step is to input the design into the computer and create a 3D surface model. From the 3D model, a Rapid Prototype is made. In the case of the Shaker Hood, a clay model was milled. To help engineers get an idea of what the part will actually look like, a material called DI-NOK is used. It’s a film or wrapping that comes in a variety of colors and simulates a painted surface. “It’s a very versatile material,” noted Vardis.
TWEAKS ALL AROUND
At this point, management gets involved and they review the part and make a determination on whether the part can be manufactured. They also get feedback from engineers. The model is then tweaked, based on input, until everyone is on board. The dimensions of the revised model are scanned and brought back into the computer.
One aspect that makes this process so unique is how the various groups work as a team and utilize seamless integration. By doing so, the Shaker Hood looks like it was designed when the vehicle was planned, whereas, an aftermarket part often looks like an afterthought.
