In the annals of drag racing, Chrysler, through its Plymouth and Dodge brands, dominated the Super Stock and Pro Stock classes throughout the 1960s and into the early 1970s. As time marched on, many of the racing legends that campaigned these high-horsepower machines to numerous world records and championships have left us. Today, few remain to tell their stories firsthand on what it was like to battle it out every weekend on drag strips across the USA. Herb McCandless is one of those living legends. Known as “Mr. 4 Speed”, McCandless powershifted Belvederes, Darts, ’Cudas, Demons and many other HEMI^® engine-powered racecars to many class victories and titles through his illustrious racing career.
