Dodge Announces Three New Theft Protection Measures

Dodge has developed three new security measures to help protect owners from having their vehicles stolen by thieves. This includes the Enhanced Security Mode, Key Programming Lockdown and the Intrusion Module.

The Enhanced Security Mode allows the owner to enter a 4-digit code to limit engine output to less than 3 horsepower, and it will be available Monday for the 2021 model year Challengers and Chargers. Key Programming Lockdown prevents thieves from programming new keys and it will be available for 2020 and 2021 models as early as October, but the company is committed to having the system in action by January 2022. After the 2020 and 2021 models are handled, Dodge will roll out the same software for 2015 through 2019 model years, with a new year being added every six weeks. As for the Intrusion Module, it senses glass breakage, movement inside the vehicle and vehicle inclination, sounding the alarm if there are any changes. It will be offered for the 2022 model year, standard in cars with the 392 and SRT® Hellcat HEMI® engines and available in V6 and 5.7-liter-powered models.

For those who don’t want to wait for those updated security measures, Mopar® currently offers the Electronic Vehicle Tracking System, which can be purchased and installed into any modern Dodge vehicle.

Challenger and Charger Theft

If you drive a Dodge Challenger or Charger, you have likely read an article about how the modern Mopar muscle cars have become popular targets of thieves. Some reports have glorified it enough to sound like these are the only vehicles being stolen, when in reality, it is less than two tenths of a percent of all thefts annually. Since 2016, there have been around 6,000 Challengers and Chargers stolen in the United States and while that might sound high, during that same 5-year period, roughly 3.75-million vehicles were stolen across America, as thieves take advantage of vehicles with keyless entry and push-button starting systems.

Although the Challenger and Charger account for less than two tenths of a percent of vehicles stolen over the past 5 years in the United States, the amount of media coverage for models with catchy automotive terms such as “Scat Pack” and “Hellcat” have led to an inordinate number of articles being written about these particular Dodge vehicles being stolen. Naturally, this has created a great deal of anxiety for many modern Mopar muscle car owners, but it has also put pressure on the folks from Dodge to help further protect against vehicle theft.

In seeing the concern from owners, Dodge went to work to devise a series of solutions to help protect your Challenger or Charger from being stolen. We recently had a chance to speak with the Dodge Brand, who shared the details on the new security measures for the modern Mopar muscle cars.

How Thieves Steal a Modern Dodge

The Dodge Challenger, Charger and every other modern vehicle with keyless entry and push-button start relies on a key fob system. The key fob communicates via radio frequency with the vehicle whenever you push a button, but it also emits a constant signal that lets the car know that it is near or inside.

Unfortunately, after smashing a window to gain access to the vehicle and its electrical system, thieves use a gadget to program a new key fob. Once this happens, they can unlock the doors, start the car and drive away as though they have your key.

To battle this issue and other forms of theft, Dodge has come up with a trio of solutions for the Challenger and Charger to help stop car thieves in their tracks.

Enhanced Security Mode

Earlier this year, the Dodge brand announced plans to launch the Enhanced Security Mode, which replaces the standard Valet Mode. When engaged with a 4-digit code in the radio head unit, this software keeps the engine at idle speed, limiting the output to just 2.8 horsepower. With less than 3 horsepower, thieves won’t be able to take off with the car even if they have a key.

This solution will officially become available on Monday, August 16 for the 2021 Challengers and Chargers with either the 392-cubic inch or supercharged SRT Hellcat HEMI engines. The Enhanced Security Mode is installed by a simple dealer reflash and it is free to owners. This is also reversible, in case you decide that you want the original Valet Mode back.

This measure prevents a thief from making a speedy getaway in your car, but it doesn’t stop them in their tracks. That is why Dodge has developed two other, more aggressive options for Challenger and Charger owners who want to make sure that no one creates a new key in an effort to steal their beloved Mopar muscle car.

Key Programming Lockdown

As mentioned above, the high tech thieves access the vehicle’s electrical system to program a new key. To put a stop to this, Dodge has developed the Key Programming Lockdown. As the name suggests, this locks the in-car portion of the key system, preventing thieves from creating a new key fob while allowing owners to retain all normal functions, which sounds like the perfect means of making these cars more secure.

There is only one downside to the Key Programming Lockdown. The same process is also what the dealership uses to make new keys for your Challenger or Charger, so if you have the lockdown performed, you will no longer be able to have a new key made unless you buy a new module. The module lists for $159, so if you lose all of your keys, you will need to buy new keys and a new module before having the key reprogrammed.

Dodge is aware that not being able to reprogram new keys can prove to be a headache down the road, so when owners take their Challenger or Charger in to have this software installed via a reflash of the computer system, they can also opt to have up to 2 keys made at a discounted rate.

The company is committed to having the Key Programming Lockdown available by January 2022, but the brand explained that they are targeting October 2021 for the initial rollout. At first, this solution will only be offered for 2020 and 2021 model year vehicles, but after the initial rollout, Dodge plans to release the software update approximately every six weeks to support an additional model year. This will continue back to the 2015 model year and it will be available for all Challengers and Chargers, regardless of the engine.

Finally, while this solution is currently being developed for the Challenger and Charger, the Dodge team recognizes the demand for increased security for Durango owners. The company plans to announce the Key Programming Lockdown for the roomy SUV in the near future.

Intrusion Module

The last new security system that Dodge has developed is the Intrusion Module, which will be offered for the 2022 model year Challenger and Charger. Standard on Scat Pack and SRT Hellcat models while being optional on SXT, GT and R/T models, the Intrusion Module will detect a window being broken or anything moving inside the vehicle while also incorporating an inclination sensor. If someone breaks a window, reaches in through an open window or tries to tow the car away, the alarm is activated in a similar fashion to many popular aftermarket alarm systems.

This measure can be deactivated via the radio head unit in the event that you park the car with people inside, or if you are hauling your Challenger or Charger somewhere in a trailer.

When you pair the Intrusion Module with the Key Programming Lockdown, thieves will not be able to create a new key, nor will they be able to break in or tow away a Dodge Challenger or Charger without the alarm blaring.

In summary, if you have a 2021 Challenger or Charger, you can upgrade to the Enhanced Security Mode starting on Monday. If you have a 2020 or 2021 model, you could be able to add the Key Programming Lockdown system as soon as October and if you own one of the muscle cars from 2015 through 2019, that system could be available early next year. If you buy a 2022 model, it will come with the Intrusion Module as either a standard or optional feature.

Mopar Electronic Vehicle Tracking System

If you want a tighter security system right away, Mopar offers their Electronic Vehicle Tracking System or EVTS. This system costs $495 and offers far more elaborate tracking services than the standard UConnect® Guardian system. It cannot be disabled through the UConnect system and it includes features like geofencing, so you can monitor your vehicle’s movement when someone else is driving it. This system doesn’t prevent someone from stealing your Dodge, but if it does disappear, the Mopar EVTS provides live tracking services through Guidepoint Systems.

The Mopar Electronic Vehicle Tracking System isn’t model-specific, so you can have it installed and keep tabs on any modern Dodge vehicle.

Is this software update available for 2021 JEEP Grand Cherokee SRT and HC models?


Didn’t help me. My 2019 Charger HC got stolen from in front of my house and was found completely stripped down to the chassis. I’m disappointed in Dodge that they’ve really done nothing effective about this, and more disappointed that I will never be able to get another one brand new like I had. I got mine brand new in 2019 and it only had 15k on it at the time of theft. I did my graduate school internship with FCA in Auburn Hills, and have always been a Mopar guy. I saved some deployment money to get a Charger after I got out of the military. I was so excited when I was finally able to make it happen only for someone to just come along and destroy it. This whole event is disappointing and worse to find out how easy these are to steal. Anyways, just generally defeated, rant over.


They could just put an on/off switch on the fob so no one can hop in your car while you’re sitting at your desk at work. Simple, effective, inexpensive solution that can be used by anyone who wants it. Just switch it on when you head to your car, and switch it off when you arrive at your destination.

Even better, have a switch to toggle the range between 10 feet and 100 feet (or whatever the maximum range is). Then people can keep it at 10 feet unless they really need the extra range. This might be more expensive to implement, but seriously, why in the world would manufacturers make the range so vast that it only encourages thieves to try?


I’m scheduled to drop off my SRT Durango to Zeigler Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM in Schaumburg IL for the key Programming lock out as they do offer it at that location. For anyone interested that lives in Illinois. I’ll update you all once I get it installed and provide feedback. Also I found an Alarm shop who does sell a metal bracket plate for additional security for covering access to the neutral safety handle on dodge vehicles. I was quoted $50 for the plate bracket.


Although there are said recalls for updating the security aspect, no dealerships know anything about these modules. My 2020 Scatpack widebody was stolen from an airport. The LoJack on the vehicle was useless. The car showed one spot. Officers say they combed the area, but no vehicle was found. More press should be done on national news stations to alert car owners and dealerships about these updates. Furthermore, if the dealerships don’t know about the module recalls, how many owners actually know about it?? This article was written in 2021 and here it is 2024 and vehicles are still being stolen to include the newest models. This article is worthless.

The drive shaft bearing went out as I was getting on the freeway and there was a shortage on driveshaft, but they replaced it and ever since there’s been a vibration and a wind in the rear end that sounds like a Mack truck, I put on the best differential brace from DIR And took it into the dealership and they took photos and sent them in for the request to replace the rear end. As they agreed the rear end was damaged. Also, then a couple weeks later Stellantis call the dealership to have me bring the car back in and measure the circumference of the supercharger Pulley , and check the catalytic converter‘s and exhaust for any modifications which I had not done so everything was good to go, but wait, there’s more, Galantis called the dealership and told them to have me bring the car back in so they could check the harmonic balancer to see if it was Upgraded with the 10% overdrive Pulley, no modifications were ever done to the car, a few weeks later, they sent a letter saying that now they are not going to warrantee the rear end, because I put a supportive brace on the outside of the rear end. I have talked to a dozen people at Jeep Wave and Srt And no one wants to give me an explanation of how a supportive brace could have in any way damage the rear end even though everyone knows that it did not start making these noises until after the drive shaft failed at high speed. After $200,000 a couple thousand dollar rear end change is not the end of the world , but they don’t care about their customers and they won’t warranty anything anymore. I wish Oldsmobile were still around.


I ordered a 2021 challenger hellcat redeye, widebody and have the lockout done but it did not keep the morons from coming in five times and smashing the window and ripping the dash apart trying to program a key, eventually sold the car because it was useless to me after all that damage And I read about the new security features so I ordered a 2022 jailbreak and I was also told that it had glass breakage sensors and motion sensors for inside the cabin but the alarm did not go off when the window was broke nor did it go off when they got in the car and tore the dash apart , I am so disgusted with Stellantis and Fair Oaks Dodge, I’ve been a Dodge fan since the early 70s and have purchased over 25 dodge vehicles and I will never buy a Dodge again


I have a buddy that’s a dodge dealer general manager and he can’t seem to find anything on this. Dodge needs to answer all the dodge owners. I have a 2022 Hellcat widebody that arrived in Jan of this year and surely doesn’t have it in it.


Are the new three security systems available for a 2023 Dodge Challenger RT with a 5.7 l. I was not offered this at the time of purchase and am awaiting to hear from the dealership if they offer it as a reflash of the system or however they do it. Should this be available at any Dodge dealership?

My dealer found the key module lockdown in the recalls listed for my car. Listed as rfh security and was customer satisfaction so no charge.


Dodge doesn’t care if your vehicle gets stolen or not. This was just a little PR move to make it look like they are working to stop theft of our beautiful vehicles. The only update you’ll be able to get on 2022 and 2023 model year vehicles is the “Intrusion Mode” as it comes standard no matter the engine. Dodge corporate and my local service department has told me that the “Enhanced Security Mode” update and the “Key Programing Lockdown” update are only eligible on 2021 Challengers and Chargers. On top of that, if you have a 2021, none of the dealers know what you’re even talking about and have to do their own research and they STILL will not do the updates because Dodge dropped the ball and never told them. Shameful company.


I’m really starting to believe dodge owners are being played with this “update” not a single dealer in the metro Detroit area knows about this update. They looked up my vin about 10 times, that’s how many dealers I’ve called.

So here is what I’m doing next week, I’ll be contacting the Michigan AG office about this because another false hood is that dodge claims that they make up just a fraction of auto thefts in the country when i took a ride down some of these side streets in Detroit. I saw a stripped down wagoneer, dodge Durango on blocks, a challenger body laying in the street and that was just on the first street.

So if this update really does exist then the dealers need to be educated on this TSB because people are fed up with it


Bought my 2022 challenger scat pack two weeks ago. Dealer did not mention any of this to me. Would have liked enhanced security mode and key programming lockdown. Last night thieves stole my car in less than three minutes ( neighbors heard the alarm go off and thought it was me outside and didn’t mention anything until this morning). Went to where locator said it should be (65 miles away) and it wasn’t there. This Information at time of purchase would have saved my car.

I had my 22 Scat Pack stolen out of my driveway within minutes. Evidently all these security features are on it. None which I was even aware of Unfortunately was not aware it was this easy to steal prior to the updates either. This is my second Challenger, I noticed what looks like 2 cameras/sensors on the head liner in the rear. So much for those. My alarm DID go off when my window was busted out. But these suckers worked so fast and managed to get it down the road… I don’t know if my vehicle was in the enhanced security mode or not . They found my car on the side of the road undamaged.

Considering purchasing a durango srt. Im confused on the new security feature that sets off an alarm if you bust a window how is that not already standard. I have a 2011 chevy malibu and if you bust a window the alarm will sound. But if i purchase a 2022 im going to have to pay to have it added?

2017 Daytona392. I’m reaching security covers. I’ve been trying to locate or don’t know if FCA/MOPAR have these types of products. Such as, Neutral Strap Cover, a Security Lock down Relay Cover. So that the alarm/horn relay would not get pulled out of the relay box. Also a Center cap lock down for my Rims. If anyone has any information where to locate. Let me know. Thx


Bought a 22 Challenger Scat Pack in April 2022. Dealer had no idea about Enhanced Security Mode or Key Programming Lockdown. They contacted Stellantis and were told these updates are not available. Why release this information to the public when dealerships have no idea about it and they are not even available?


Went to two Chrysler Dealerships, the first one told me that there were no updates available at this time. The second was familiar with the key programming lock down but had not heard of the enhanced security feature. They also informed me that they would not discount the key fob. Please issue information to the dealerships about these upgrades for us. This is ridiculous that I had to argue with the service department just to have my vehicle security updated!


Can you please let your dealer know of these new security measures. I am also in Miami and dealers dont have a clue of these security updates. Kind of sad that customers know more than the dealers that service these cars.


Will enhanced security mode ever be available for my 2019 Hellcat Redeye?


The article states that the Enhanced Security Valet Mode will be available starting in January of 2022. I am at a large dealership in Miami, Florida (Planet Dodge) and they do not have a clue. I have been speaking with them since the middle of last year when I originally heard about this from Mopar Insiders and everyone looks like deers in headlights. It’s pretty sad and Stellantis ought to do a better job of informing their dealerships about the products that they offer.
What really irks the heck out me is that I have been asking them about this since the middle of last year and no one from Planet Dodge has bothered to look into it and/or has had the courtesy to get back to me.
